Huang Xiaoming, Yolanda and Faye Yu couldn’t save it together, and Battle of the Roses broke a good hand.

The domestic legal industry drama has gone up again. The urban drama "The Battle of the Roses" starring Yolanda, Huang Xiaoming, Faye Yu, etc. has been broadcast on CCTV eight sets. The lineup of powerful actors has been added, and the plot similar to the high-scoring European and American drama "A Good Wife" has made the audience expect a lot from this drama. However, at present, the ratings have not broken "1", and the response on the Internet has been flat, and even some viewers shouted disappointment after watching it. Battle of the Roses has several disappointing shortcomings in making a good hand into this situation.

The Battle of the Roses tells the story of stay-at-home mother Gu Nian (Yolanda) who returns to the workplace due to a marital accident. She enters Yishenghe Law Firm under the recommendation of her old classmate Feng Sheng (Huang Xiaoming). Gu Nian’s return to the workplace is not easy, not only facing the doubts of senior law firm partners, but also competing with a new law firm, Rick Fang (Dai Xu).

Judging from the plot, the Battle of the Roses is basically a complete copy of the Good Wife, and the background of the characters is completely unchanged.

The women are housewives who have been studying law for ten years. Because of their husbands’ scandals, they went to an old friend’s law firm to return to their old jobs. The husbands are the same. The husband in "A Good Wife" was born as a lawyer and was imprisoned as a state prosecutor. The husband in "The Battle of the Roses" was born as a lawyer and was also arrested and derailed. Even Li Dawei, the divorce lawyer in the play, has his name translated from David Lee, a family lawyer in A Good Wife. It is true that the original plot is reasonable and highly accepted, but this kind of behavior that ignores the differences between the legal systems of the two countries and various social environments is obviously that the screenwriter is lazy, making the career line of this drama seem logically simple and somewhat brainless, not only failing to continue the high quality of the original, but also trying to sit on the bonus.

As a legal career drama, the theme of The Battle of Roses is clear. The two "roses" refer to the heroine Gu Nian and her superior commander, and the "battle" is reflected in the differences between the two women in their career choices. Gu Nian, who should have joined the workplace ten years ago, chose to be a full-time housewife to take care of her family. She didn’t return to the workplace until the family crisis ten years later. Gu Nian not only had to adapt to the change of lawyer status, but also had to adjust herself after returning to the social competitive environment. According to the conventional story setting, Gu Nian should regain her value in the workplace by virtue of her professional ability, and win the appreciation of Ling Yi (Faye Yu), and this competitive relationship between women in the workplace has also changed the traditional perspective of gender opposition from another angle.

The starting point of this view is undoubtedly correct, but unfortunately, it is not tenable. The Battle of the Roses deviated from the original intention of being a female legal career drama and entered the stereotype of most domestic dramas. Countless domestic dramas in the past have been turned into idol dramas by voicing that "industry dramas have been made into idol dramas", and they have changed from engaging in careers to falling in love. Although The Battle of the Roses has not reached this point, it has failed to portray the career advancement path of caring for one step at a time, and it is disappointing that the theme of women’s mutual help has not overwhelmed the career romance.

Another big pain point is also due to the casting of these protagonists. The Battle of the Roses is intended to create a legal career drama for the female host. It is natural to choose young and middle-aged actors, and Yolanda, Huang Xiaoming and Faye Yu can also be regarded as powerful actors of the same age. However, as mentioned earlier, this drama has not escaped the stereotype of "idol drama of drastic changes in the workplace", and with the filter covered from beginning to end, it almost smoothes the faces of the actors, making them look nondescript instead of brilliant.

Then even if you follow the guidance to "smash cp", the emotional line of this drama is really embarrassing. Huang Xiaoming is indeed an acting school, but when it comes to emotional drama, he can’t get rid of his own "greasy" trend, and with his tight belly, pure blue jeans and T-shirt makeup in TV series, it’s hard to make an ordinary middle-aged man feel throbbing with his emotional drama …

Originally, the Central Eight was in the town, powerful actors joined in, and even relied on the original plot to set blessings. The ambition of "Battle of the Roses" was not bad, not to mention the big bang, but it was always not a problem to produce a conscience drama with good reputation. But at present, word-of-mouth cannot be guaranteed, and ratings are hard to say hot, which is really disappointing.
